Elizabeth Bollen (MS) and Peng Shang (Ph.D) recognized by GSA

Two geology students, Elizabeth Bollen (MS) and Peng Shang (Ph.D), were recognized for their research last month by the Geological Survey of Alabama (GSA). Elizabeth received the John S. Winefordner research scholarship ($1,500) which will be used for completing microprobe analyses of garnet to determine trace element and major element zoning; analyzes are part of her project “Mineral compositional zoning as records of collisional events: a possible over-prediction”. Peng is a first year graduate student and was awarded the John G. Newton scholarship. The funding received by GSA will help him establishing his research.
