The transition toward ever growing economies with lowered carbon footprint requires increased access to and sustainable use of a diverse range of metallic (Cu, Co, V, Ge, Zn) and non-metallic resources (graphite). These “sustainable elements” are often referred to as critical and strategic elements. Mineral discovery and exploration successes remain first and foremost conditioned by a better scientific understanding of the physico-chemical processes controlling the origin and distribution of mineral resources across all scales.

At UA, students work with world-class scientists to explore the origin, distribution, and development of these vital resources using technology and techniques available at very few research universities, such as sulfide and graphite Re-Os geochronology.
