Lu and colleagues used a powerful, ultra-high resolution technique (Electrospray Ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry) to reveal complexity and diversity of natural dissolved organic matter molecules, as well as to understand how human activities alter the sources and quality of dissolved organic matter in fluvial waters.
